What 3-Phase Power and Fiber Internet Mean for Your Shoot

Power and internet are easy to overlook in a location search because neither appears in the hero image. For a working production, they determine whether the lighting plan, client monitor, file transfer and wrap all run smoothly. Here is how to turn two technical phrases into the right questions for your location manager or gaffer.

3-phase power is capacity, not a lighting plan

Three-phase electricity can support production-grade equipment more reliably than a typical domestic circuit arrangement, but it is not a promise that every fixture can be plugged in anywhere. Your gaffer still needs the fixture list, rated draw, circuit locations, cable routes and an allowance for catering, air conditioning and other loads. Send that list before the shoot; do not make the first load test part of the call time.

What to share with the location

Give the venue your shooting hours, equipment list, anticipated draw, generator plan if any, and the rooms or exterior zones you want to use. Ask where distribution can sit, which routes must stay clear and whether the equipment needs protection from tropical rain. A location can confirm its infrastructure; your production electrician decides the safe distribution plan.

Fiber changes the data workflow

Fast fiber is valuable when the camera department needs to offload footage, the client needs to review selects remotely, or a social team must publish during a campaign. It does not remove the need for local backups. Keep the primary cards, make two local copies and treat a cloud upload as an additional copy rather than the only one. Test the actual workflow at arrival, especially when several devices share the connection.

Use the connection for the work that benefits most

Prioritise tethered review, secure file transfer, client video calls and a mid-day offload. Large uploads can run while the crew resets a scene, rather than becoming a rushed task at wrap. Confirm access credentials, the placement of the client monitor and whether a dedicated wired connection is required for your workflow.

Before confirming a location, ask: What power is available? Who confirms the circuits? Where does equipment load in? Where do hair, make-up and data teams work?
